Our Mission.

Maya Angelou at the Oakland Community School in the 1970s

Our mission is to create a liberated learning space for young scholars. We believe in the power of love. We understand the importance of education as a major stepping stone towards collective liberation. We believe that our people deserve to learn and grow in spaces committed to serving their basic needs and developing their skills for the future.

Malcolm X Academy is an extension of Neighbor Program’s commitment to meeting the needs of the people. Neighbor Program is a Pan-Afrikan Organization that is committed to serving the people and radically loving our neighbors. Pan-Afrikanism means we are committed to the complete liberation and unification of Afrika and her People globally. This struggle has always been waged in solidarity with Afrikan, Native/Indigenous, and Afro Descendant communities in Standing Rock; Venezuela; Cooperation Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi; Brazil; Chiapas; the Avalon Village in Detroit; Colombia; Kenya; Palestine; South Africa; Ghana, Ayiti, and all other places who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all peoples.

Education.

Malcolm X Academy will employ Afrikan and Indigenous liberation pedagogies that teach our children how to learn not what to learn. We are committed to project-based learning platforms that encourage critical thinking, play, community enrichment, and hands-on activities led by learners.

Our programs will include:

  • Free Breakfast & Lunch

  • Afrikan Culture and History

  • English Literacy & Foreign Languages

  • Advanced Mathematics & Science

  • Afrikan Drum & Dance

  • Community Farming

  • Arts & Culture

  • & More!

Community.

The school will be housed within the Shakur Center for Health and Wellness developed by Neighbor Program.

Neighbor Program is a community-run organization in Sacramento, CA that works to provide ongoing services to low-income communities across Sacramento, with a particular emphasis on serving Black & Brown children, youth, and families.

Neighbor Program has various projects in operation that serve the community of Oak Park, Sacramento. We have a Free Breakfast Program, a Free Grocery Program, a Newspaper, an Arts Program, and an Expungement Clinic for folks impacted by incarceration.

Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.
